Introducing Paid Access – Transform Your Community into a Social Business

Today we are announcing one of the most requested features on Ning – Paid Access. Paid Access gives Ning Creators new ways to monetize their communities with complete flexibility. You can set a fixed price or ask for donations for site access, premium groups and content within a Ning site.

In a matter of clicks, you can transform your community into a social business. Because Paid Access is an integrated payment system, you can create a seamless charging experience and collect payments in real-time. Members of Ning sites are the most passionate you can find online – they care, participate, and provide their support both on and offline. They create fan fiction in their spare time for Twilight, buy every t-shirt from Linkin Park, and organize grassroots movements to rally support for their cause. These grassroots supporters and avid fans seek new content and a premium experience on over 90,000 Ning sites.

Ning has done the heavy lifting behind the scenes – handling the infrastructure and implementation – so that it is a breeze to set up and use. There are a variety of ways to use this feature:

  • Paid Membership: Collect membership fees from a community.
  • Paid Groups: Create exclusive spaces for premium members to network, have a deeper conversation, and access special content.
  • Paid Content: Provide a destination for members to access premium content such as reports, articles, webinars, videos and music.
  • Donations: Ask for member donations to keep your community going or to benefit your site or a cause.

Here is an example of what Paid Access looks like in action:

With Paid Access, you can easily run VIP fan clubs, publish exclusive reports, create professional networking groups or organize special webinars. There are endless possibilities to take advantage of this feature.

Awesome! If I had a use for it, I’d use it.. This would be amazing for a network that was more business oriented..

I would need something more community friendly.. Something like the ability to restrict members, or limit them to a number of pics/vids/music/etc they can post.. and then have paid members with unlimited posts and access.. Overtime, if this is what this develops into, I can see myself using this feature..

Yes yes yes because my site is paid membership based and I have been doing this manually and it’s a pain in my butt. But with this feature people can just sign up and pay instantly and have access to the network this is really what I have been waiting for.

Excellent new feature. This opens up an entirely different use for Ning. I can imagine this as a way to use Ning to run an online course.

    Wow, awesome! Good work, Dev.

    A few questions:
    1. Can you create multiple subscription prices? E.g., Student Member = $20; Standard Membe = $60; Full Member = $120, etc..?
    2. Can payments be automatically recurring?
    3. If these features are still in development, is it easy for a paid programmer to make these customizations?

    Thanks!

Hey, Adi. Sorry for the slow reply on this. You can create multiple paywalls, but not levels of membership in quite this way. Many people will probably do this via Group paywalls. We’re working on recurring events, as it requires a specific change on the PayPal side. I don’t think this feature will be available via our API, but if I find out differently, I’ll let you know. Cool, this is one thing I’ve been wishing/asking for ever since I went Pro ~ can’t wait to try it out!

Hi Jonathan, a quick question: Will this be included and available to Ning Pro users from 20 July?

  • http://www.imagilearning.com John Jamison

I’m interested in knowing how the new “paid access” feature can be used to sell articles and other e-documents. I had planned on moving to a solution like Amazon…but if I’ll be able to do this on Ning I’ll just move all of our work to our current: futureoflearning.ning.com site. Is there any information on just how this paid process will work? For example, would I just put the contents of an article on a “page” in Ning, and sell access to that page…or do we upload the actual document somewhere…?

    Thanks for the new features…

    John

Hey, Shyam! This is an optional add-on, and you will see it as an option sometime next week.

  • http://ericsuesz.com Eric Suesz

Hey, John! You could sell ebooks or other content like that by using the page option and putting up a paywall so that only people who can access the page can download. Just like you say, you can upload documents to a page using the built-in rich text editor (attachment icon). That would work.

This is fantastic! I was thinking how I could make part of the site paid for a premium coaching group and here it is, how exciting :D

  • http://minialbumscraps.ning.com Lisa

Will I be able to list say 12 documents or items all on one page and be able to put paynow or add to cart or the similar under it?? I really would like to make the items that I have available to my members but as of yet I have not been able ot do this easily. thanks

  • http://www.piagrows.ning.com Joe

    Is this for Pro only?

  • http://ericsuesz.com Eric Suesz

Hey, Joe! This is an optional add-on for all plans. Check out the FAQ here for more info.

  • http://ericsuesz.com Eric Suesz

Hey, Lisa! You can charge for access to that Page (or any Page), but it won’t have a shopping cart feature. I think of it as a paywall for the network, a group, or a page.

  • http://network.wannabestudios.org Shyam Madhavan Sarada

Hi Eric, is this up and running? Could you tell me where/how I can access it?

  • http://www.ThinkAtheist.com Morgan

When will this be released to the public?

  • Joe Boss

This will be such a great feature. Now all you have to do is figure a migration plan for groups that use flat blog systems for their membership! Go NING.

  • http://tradingstock.ning.com Steven Vincent

WHEN exactly will this actually be available? I need this NOW!!

  • http://ericsuesz.com Eric Suesz

It is available, and you can find it on your dashboard.
