Archive Your Network’s Content

After you have installed the Ning Network Archiver, you can download the content of your Ning Network. Open the Ning Network Archiver and sign in to your network using your Network Creator email address and password.  When you sign in, you must specify the web address (such as network.ning.com) of the Ning Network you want to archive.

By default, your content will be saved to a folder on your computer’s desktop.  If you would like to change the destination of the files you are about to download, then you can do so by clicking “Change.”  When you archive your Ning Network’s content, you will have the option to access the media files as internet links, or downloading these media files to your computer.  If you are planning to save your media files, then you may want to consider using an external hard drive for your file destination, since these files can take up significant storage space.

Next, select which features you want to archive. Click the “Download” button beneath the feature you want to export.  You can only export one feature at a time.

Please note: You cannot archive the same feature multiple times in 24 hours. If you have clicked on the “Download” button for a particular feature, that button will be grayed out afterwards for 24 hours. After that time, you will again be able to download the content in this feature.

Clicking “Download” will save a .json file to your computer containing the 10,000 most recent content items of that particular feature.  Initially, this .json file will contain internet links to all of the media files contained in that feature.

If you would like to download the media files to your computer as well, then you can do so by clicking the “Download Media Files” button after downloading the feature.  Please note that media files can be quite large, and may require significant storage on your computer hard drive.  If your Ning Network is large, then you may want to consider archiving your content on an external hard drive.

If you choose to download the media files of a feature on your Ning Network, then these files will be saved to your computer or your external storage destination. The media links within your original .json file will be redirected to point to the media files on your computer.  You can learn more about archiving your media files here.

There are a few restrictions on the content that you can archive through the Ning Network Archiver. The Ning Network Archiver exports the most recent 10,000 content items of each feature on your Ning Network (photos, videos, etc.). It also exports the most recent 100,000 members of your Ning Network. If your content exceeds these limits, please let us know through the Ning Help Center.
