NewTeeVee.com is the source for news and analysis on online video. If you haven’t checked it out, you should. It rocks. I read it every day.

So, you can imagine how psyched we were to see NewTeeVee and Metacafe use Ning for their Pier Screenings program. This is a fantastic summer screening series in San Francisco for watching online videos outside at night under the (very) fresh air. Each screening has it’s own theme. The next event is July 24.

As a network on Ning, there are a few things to highlight about Pier Screenings:

  • Totally Integrated Look and Feel with the Main NewTeeVee Site. One is running on Ning. One is running on their own servers. The design is another great example of 100% CSS control and customization of your social network on Ning. Directions for this type of CSS customization are after the jump.
  • Using Your Own Domain Name. The URL for Pier Screenings is http://screenings.newteevee.com.
  • A Bit of Custom Development Goes A Long Way. We don’t yet have the option to add video channels or categories. With a bit of custom development and use of tags, they were able to create separate tabs for each of the different screenings as well as add a tab back to their main NewTeeVee site and a page for sponsors.
  • Photos from the Event. Especially for events, the ability to add not only videos, but photos to a site is key. In fact, if NewTeeVee wanted to, they could promote the option everyone on every network across Ning has for people to email photos and videos directly from the event into Pier Screenings.
  • Integrated Watermarked Video Player. To further promote the event itself, they have watermarked the video player (see below). The watermark links back to the Pier Screenings network when it is embedded elsewhere.

In My Hood, with Rabbits

One of the nice things about the embedded video players and photo slideshows is that they can be added to the main NewTeeVee.com site by simply copying and pasting. This step automatically creates new links to this new “sub-section” of NewTeeVee.com.

To remove boxes around your network’s content, just click the “Manage” tab, then choose the “Appearance” option. From the “Appearance” page, click the “Advanced” tab and paste in the following custom CSS (it can go below any other custom CSS you might have already added):

/* Feature Box Titlebars */
.xg_module_head {
padding-left:0;
background-color:transparent;
border-bottom:1px solid #000000;
}
.notitle { display:none!important; }

/* Feature Box Body */
.xg_module_body, .pad {
padding-left:0;
background-color:transparent;
}
.notification { padding-left:7px; }
.ningmsg { padding-left:15px; }

/* Feature Box Footers */
.xg_module_foot {
padding-left:0;
background-color:transparent;
}

Be sure to tweak the hex code color #000000 shown above to work with your network’s color palette. This site is useful if you need hex code color help. Happy un-boxing!
