There’s a reason gym memberships surge at the beginning of the year; people resolve to start working out and head to their nearest 24 Hour Fitness to sign up. The problem? People lost their motivation, and without a workout buddy or support group, they slowly stop going. By March, their membership pass sits unused.

Today we’re highlighting three Ning Networks that focus on being active, whether on foot, on a bike or in the gym. We can’t promise you’ll make like the biggest loser if you join one of these, but who knows — it may just be the support you’ll need to kick start a workout regiment in the new year.

The Veloist

Once you make the initial investment (bike, helmet, lock, etc) bike is relatively inexpensive. You, your bike, the open road — that’s what The Veloist celebrates. Its tagline is, fittingly, “the world is better on a bike.” While there are all different types of cyclists (mountain, road, etc), The Veloist welcomes all, with groups for commuters, those who set up their bikes inside, and road warriors.

For those with a little more workout ambition, there’s no better workout bang for your buck than running. Tribal Running is a Ning Network for runners of all abilities, from 5Ks to marathons. If you are focused on getting your run in, you can’t let the winter weather stop you; that’s why member John is spending time running indoors. The members of Tribal Running are also supportive of their fellow runners, posting encouraging comments on blog posts detailing lapses in training or issues getting back out there.

If you already have an consistent cardio routine, weight training may be a good next step to take. While newcomers may not have the physique of the most active (physically AND online) members of BodyProud, they can serve as inspiration: these members are super buff! They’ve got a great toolkit for those just getting started, and a quotes section that members can turn to when they need a little extra motivation.
