10/10/10: Tell Your Story of One Day on Earth

What a difference a day makes. Or can make.

We’ve had our eye on a Ning Network that has been — for about the last six months — counting down the days, hours, and minutes until one important day: this Sunday.

One Day on Earth’s goal is at once high-minded and idealistic, but ultimately simple in its execution. They want to create an archive of global media to affect positive change, and they intend to include in that archive video footage that represents every single country in the entire world. They’re asking as many people as possible to contribute at least one minute of film that is shot during the 24-hour period of one particular day: 10/10/10.

Fortune Shines on Ning

We got a great write-up yesterday by Fortune magazine’s Senior Editor-at-Large Adam Lashnisky. Adam covers the high-tech world for Fortune and other news outlets. He’s a long-time Silicon Valley journalist. (You may have heard his voice piping from a radio via his many appearances on NPR’s Marketplace.) Since he has well over a decade of experience covering the high-tech West Coast beat, it’s an honor to have him cover Ning.

Flood Relief in Pakistan: How You Can Help

There’s not a lot you can do to quickly solve big problems. They often require little solutions — lots of them.

Such is the case with the recent floods in Pakistan. Massive monsoons have led to floods that are covering one-fifth of Pakistan, land that regularly hosts about 10 million people. That’s a lot of people. By most accounts, these are the worst floods in 80 years. That’s a long time. All that extra water leads to a whole lot less clean, drinkable, uncontaminated H2O — which leads to disease and death. It’s a big disaster, no doubt about it.

The New Ning: What to Expect Next Week

We’re less than a week away from offering our three new plans. July 20th. That’s next Tuesday. We’ve been tying up loose ends and preparing for what promises to be a very busy first week of the “new” Ning.

To help everyone get prepared, we’ve been blanketing the Creators Network with information about the plans and answering as many questions as possible. We want everyone to feel like they have plenty of time and all the information they need to make the best decision for their members.

Now Live! Content Flagging on Ning Networks

If you have an active Ning Network, you know that moderating the content added to your Ning Network can be an important part of making it a welcoming place. We’re happy to announce a new feature we think Network Creators are going to be very excited about: content flagging. With the new content flagging feature, you don’t have to go it alone when it comes to moderation. You can appoint members to flag — and hide — content that might be inappropriate and then decide for yourself whether questionable content belongs on your Ning Network. The idea is simple: Use the power of crowdsourcing and make the moderation of your Ning Network more efficient for everyone involved.

Ming and Ping and Ning: It’s about the Fans

For every big-name musical act like 50 Cent or Linkin Park playing to massive crowds on Ning, there’s a host of scrappy, not-yet-breakout bands using Ning to get the word out.
