Your Members and Ning.com

As we previously blogged and described in the plan details, your Ning Network now has a custom network ID. Based on input from our Network Creators, we are planning to end cross-network Ning authentication via a Ning ID very soon. This is part of our broader plan to give you more control over your Ning Network design and member experience. As a first step, today we dropped “Ning ID” from the sign-up experience on your Ning Network. This means that when members join, they won’t see the “We use a Ning ID for authentication” text. This won’t impact how your current members sign-in to your Ning Network. Their sign-in email address and password will remain the same.

My Network: Navigation Updates [Now Live]

After our launch earlier this week, we have been busy listening to your feedback on the changes we made in the product. One area has been the difficulty in navigating manage pages that some of you reported. We have investigated this in detail and it is clear we need to make improvements here.

These navigation issues fall under two clear but distinct areas:

Pearson to provide Ning Mini for free to educators

When we recently announced our new pricing plans (which launch July 20th, 2010), we heard from many of you who were concerned about the future of education-focused Ning Networks. Ning Networks have become a valuable complement to many schools and other educational institutions by helping teachers, parents and students supplement class curriculums; allowing educators and administrators to share best practices; and by helping all these groups bring the vitality and vibrancy of their institutions online.

Making Billing Easier for Network Creators

It’s Day 3 since the launch, and Network Creators who have selected a Ning Mini, Plus, or Pro plan will notice several billing enhancements we’ve made. Here is a quick overview of these new features:

Annual Billing
We now offer annual billing so you can pay once and not worry about invoices and payments for the rest of the year. Besides the convenience, annual billing also comes with a hefty discount that’s equivalent to 2 or more months of free services, depending on the plan selected.

New Network Creators Network Coming November 9th

In April, we moved our Ning Network Creators Network to Get Satisfaction in an effort to address what we thought was a desire for people to have an independent place to share best practices around creating successful Ning Networks without our meddling.

Introducing Social Sign-In

Here at Ning, we pay close attention to customer feedback. Ning Creators consistently remind us how important it is to have complete freedom to customize their online community experience. An important request around this idea has been for a more streamlined member registration and sign-in process. After all, who has the time to create and remember yet another username and password?

Tonight’s release is live! September 29, 2009

10/2 update: We’ve made an update to how email verification works for people who are already members of a Ning Network. When you sign in to a Ning Network that you’re already a member of, you won’t need to verify your email address. But if you’re already a member of one Ning Network and you join a new one, you’ll be prompted to verify your email when you sign up. Email verification will continue to be a one-time-only step.

Goodbye banning, hello better member management

Running a Ning Network is a lot like hosting an awesome party. But no matter how rocking it is, sometimes people leave and sometimes you have to kick people out. On Monday, we’ll be introducing more flexibility to the experience members have when they leave your Ning Network, and to the experience you have when you need to remove a member. These improvements will facilitate member management and keep the party going strong.

Changes to Ning.com – a Rationale

As promised, here’s a bit more color on the changes to Ning.com we launched on Monday.

We redesigned Ning.com to focus on Ning Networks and your settings across Ning Networks. Now on Ning.com, you have full access to your list of Ning Networks created and joined as well as Settings across Ning Networks, which is super handy when you want to, for example, update your photo across your Ning Networks or change what types of email notifications you receive from all of your Ning Networks at one time.
