The new plans: features and improvements of note

We’re very excited with how smoothly our new plans rolled out this week. A number of you have already purchased a plan. Thank you! Given all of the communication we’ve been putting out in the past few weeks to get everyone prepared, we thought we would wrap up the first week with a summary of all of the new features Network Creators who have chosen a new plan have at their fingertips.

I’ve divided the new features and improvements into categories below.

Guest Post: Create A University Class Ning Network

Today’s guest blog comes from Jack Hadley, CEO of Lava7 and an adjunct professor at BYU. We frequently hear about educators using Ning in the classroom, but it’s rare to find out just how effective using a Ning Network in a school setting is. That’s why it was so exciting to read a recent post from Jack, explaining how he used a Ning Network in an advertising class he taught at BYU. Jack’s post not only included how he used it, but what his students thought of it — and if they’d recommend it. After reading, we asked him to pen a similar post for the Ning Blog.

Just one more thing…

We’ve been rapidly developing new features here at Ning (there’s plenty more to come), but in this latest round of announcements, we wanted to add one more…

It’s now even easier for Network Creators to manage and monitor their Ning Networks on the go. We’re excited to announce that a Ning iPhone app for Network Creators is now available in the Apple iTunes Store.

WEGO Health to provide Ning Plus for free to health networks

As we’ve highlighted on the Ning Blog before, Ning Networks have proven an excellent way to build and foster communities around health topics that are important to you. Passionate leaders have rallied around such topics as diabetes, autism, and numerous other causes to provide support, information and resources through their Ning Networks.

Coming soon: You control spam suspensions on your network

Update: This is now live.

One of Ning’s primary goals in the past year has been ensuring that your Ning Networks are as spam-free as possible.

As part of this effort, we introduced some new spam-fighting features for Creators, and we built a behind-the-scenes system to automatically disable the accounts of members who we suspected of posting spam or posting too often. The system has achieved its goal. We’ve disabled hundreds of thousands of genuinely harmful spam accounts on the Ning platform.

The New File Manager: Upload Files and Make a Splash with a Custom Main Page

Today, we’re launching a very exciting new feature that I know a lot of Network Creators are going to be thrilled with: a File Manager. This will enable you to both manage files on your Ning Network and customize your members’ experience. Available for Ning Pro accounts, it will allow you to — among other things — create an impressive “splash” page your members will see before visiting your network.
I wanted to spend a few minutes today letting you know how you can get started with the File Manager, as well as give you some examples of how you might want to use this new feature. If you’re a Pro user, you’ll find the File Manager on your My Network page. Simply select Content and choose the File Manager from your left-hand navigation area.

Language Filter Live

The Language Filter is now live! This feature enables you to filter out offensive or otherwise prohibited words from content on your Ning Network. Many of you have requested this feature to help you more efficiently moderate your networks, as well as increase the value of your network traffic to advertisers.

The Language Filter is an opt-in feature available on Ning Pro. The feature comes with a default set of offensive words to filter, but the set of filtered words is customizable and completely controlled by you, the Network Creator.

Guest Post: Creating a community for a community

Ed note: Today’s post comes from Becca Martin, the creator of Live Here Oak Park, a Ning Network dedicated to the Chicago, Ill suburb of Oak Park.  When she’s not Ninging it up, Becca enjoys meeting her members around town and discovering new local businesses and restaurants to write about. If you’d like to write a guest post, please let us know in the comments below!

The Ning Infrastructure Roadmap

The Ning infrastructure runs all Ning Networks. It consists of thousands of machines with software that scales to millions of users. We have consistently delivered high uptime with our platform. As the usage characteristics change, the behavior of our infrastructure changes as well. We keep working on a number of projects that are designed to evolve our infrastructure and make the platform even more stable. As I promised last week, I wanted to provide details of the infrastructure projects we are currently working on. They’re not visible to Network Creators and are all low-level “plumbing” work, but they will enable higher uptime for all Ning Networks.

All things anime on the Omnibus

Anime Omnibus is a Ning Network for all things anime related. An ongoing series of contests, including a sketching competition, and “Pimp your profile” competition, help drive membership on this anime loving Ning Network and keep members engaged.

Every Ning Network comes with a badges feature that allows members to embed a promotional badge on another website. Anime Omnibus has taken that idea a step further and created their own, custom embeddable badges. By creating their own badge — and providing the embeddable code for it in a text box — Anime Omnibus has given its members a fantastic way to spread the word about what their Ning Network is all about.

How ya “like” me now?

Today, we’ve rolled out the beta for our Ning Like Button and the Facebook Like Buttons, two features that enhance the Ning Engagement System. “Liking” is a lightweight interaction that has proved to be incredibly powerful. Now, you can bring that power to your Ning Network with either a customized Like Button, a Facebook Like Button, or both. Try them out today by going to your Beta Page.

If you enable the Ning Like button, members can “Like” photos, videos, and blog posts right from the Main Page, in addition to detail pages:
