Everyday here at Ning, our Spam and Abuse Prevention team wakes up and thinks about one thing with singular focus: fighting spam. While spammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, so are the ways that we’re fighting back. Our goal is to balance fighting spam with ensuring that legitimate members are able to seamlessly join and contribute with as few roadblocks and work as possible.
Tomorrow (Wednesday) evening, we’ll be rolling out a brand new release to your Ning Network. This release makes it easier to use the mobile interface for your Ning Network by introducing an automatic redirect for anyone who visits your Ning Network from an iPhone. It also adds some more structure to the way Main Page features display, keeping your Main Page speedy and focused. Finally, this release refreshes the default layout for My Pages to add emphasis on the Comment Wall, making it easier for members to keep in touch with each other. Here’s what’s inside:
Ready to integrate your Ning Network with Facebook? We’re putting the finishing touches on our Facebook App. It’s designed to help your members introduce their Facebook friends to your Ning Network.
We’re always interested in giving Network Creators the tools they need to grow their Ning Networks as seamlessly and organically as possible. Early last month, we launched Twitter integration, and in the following weeks saw powerful growth in many Ning Networks as Network Creators and their members started sharing content with their Twitter followers. We think our Facebook integration will be just as powerful, if not more so.
I’m excited to introduce Leaderboards for your Ning Network. Leaderboards are ordered rankings of the top members and content on your Network, and they’re powerful for two reasons:
- For Creators, Leaderboards make it easy to discover and promote the best of your Network.
- For members, Leaderboards spark friendly competition, establish reputation, and encourage deeper, more persistent engagement.
With today’s launch, you have the power to make use of Leaderboards in the perfect way for your Network. You can view the latest trends on your Network Dashboard, add Leaderboard pages to your top-level tabs, and even add a Leaderboard module to your Main Page. Details below!
Today, we run Google Ads on the right-hand side of Ning Networks that don’t have the Go Ad-Free premium service.
Starting this Wednesday November 4, you may notice some changes to the ads that display in this right-hand column. We will start mixing in display ads, along with the contextual text ads that you currently see. We will also start targeting ads separately to Network Creators and members, so you may begin soon to see ads that only you as the Network Creator are seeing from Ning.
For the launch of Ning Mini, Ning Plus, and Ning Pro coming up on July 20, we’ve been revisiting every limit that’s currently in place on your Ning Network today. And for each of these limits, we’ve been asking: Does it make sense?
We’ve shared many updates on our FAQ page in the past two months, but I wanted to dive in a little deeper here and explain why we’ll be removing limits that don’t make sense anymore and introducing a few additional limits that will ultimately improve the member experience.
Update: This release is now live!
We’re excited to announce several new features that integrate the micro-blogging service Twitter with your Ning Network. Spreading the word with Twitter is an effective way to reach a wider audience and increase the membership of your Ning Network. In the coming days, you and your members will be able to:
**Update: This release is now scheduled for July
Following on the heels of Thursday night’s Chat and Latest Activity release, we have another release to your social network currently scheduled for July 7 Tuesday, June 30th. In this release, the bulk media uploaders that members use to add photos, videos, and music are being upgraded to make it easier to quickly add content to your social network. In addition, the Members and Friends pages will move from the grid view you see today to a list view to make it easier to skim members and make new friends.
We’re excited to announce that tonight’s release — which brings new pages, welcome boxes and themes — is now live on your social network.
You can preview the new themes in the slideshow above or, of course, right on your social network’s redesigned Appearance page, accessible via the Manage tab.
Since our February update to the Latest Activity feature, we’ve received some great feedback. Based on your feedback and the data we’ve been watching, we’re making a set of changes to the Latest Activity feature in June.
In addition to tweaking text and adding a few links, the big change is adding back member photos – and links to people’s profile pages – in the Latest Activity feature.
